The 3 Phases of Music Production: Pre-Production, Production & Post Production

📌What are the 3 phases of music production?
The three main phases of music production are: Pre-Production (planning, songwriting, and rehearsal), Production (recording and editing), and Post-Production (mixing and mastering). Together, they form the complete workflow from idea to finished song.

The 12 Music Production Archetypes

🎬 Phase 1: Pre-Production – Plan, Write, Prepare

Pre-production is where the song is conceived, shaped, and rehearsed before any mics are turned on.

🧠 Key Activities:

  • Songwriting: Melody, lyrics, chord progressions

  • Rehearsing: Tighten the arrangement, test tempos, refine parts

  • Pre-visualizing the final track: Choose instrumentation and style

  • Demos & Scratch Tracks: Rough recordings to work from later

  • Logistics: Schedule sessions, set budgets, prep gear

🔑 Why it matters:
Pre-production prevents wasted time in the studio because everyone knows what they're doing before the red record light is on.

“Measure twice, cut once” applies here more than anywhere.

🎙️ Phase 2: Production – Record and Edit

Production is the heart of the process — where performances are captured and the sonic identity takes shape.

🎚️ Key Activities:

  • Tracking: Record vocals, instruments, MIDI

  • Layering: Add harmonies, percussion, effects

  • Comping: Choose the best takes and stitch them together

  • Editing: Tuning vocals, aligning rhythm, noise cleanup

🎛️ Tools Used:

  • DAWs (Ableton, Logic, Pro Tools)

  • Audio Interfaces, Mics, Instruments

  • Plugins for sound shaping and creative production

🔑 Why it matters:
This is where raw creative energy gets frozen in time. Every decision here affects the mix and master later.

🎧 Phase 3: Post-Production – Mix and Master

Post-production turns good tracks into great records. It’s about balance, clarity, and polish.

🎚️ Key Activities:

Mixing:

  • Balance levels of all tracks

  • Add EQ, compression, delay, and reverb

  • Stereo imaging and automation

  • Create depth, punch, and cohesion

Mastering:

  • Final EQ, compression, limiting

  • Loudness optimization (LUFS)

  • Convert and export final formats (.wav, .mp3)

  • Ensure it sounds great everywhere — phone, car, headphones

🔑 Why it matters:
Post-production is the final 10% that makes up 90% of the listener's perception. It’s the bridge between creation and consumption.

🧩 Final Thoughts: Think Like a Producer

Every pro music creator understands these 3 phases and treats each one with intention.

  • Skip Pre-Production? You’ll waste hours in the studio.

  • Skip Editing? You’ll hand a mess to your mix engineer.

  • Skip Mastering? Your song won’t hold up on Spotify.

🎯 Learn to flow through the phases with balance, and your songs will sound pro — every time.
