Cheap. Fast. Great. Pick Two.
“Quality is more important than quantity. One home run is much better than two doubles.”
— Steve Jobs

There’s a rule in design and business that shows up again and again:
Cheap. Fast. Great. Pick two.
You can have it inexpensive and quick.
You can have it quick and excellent.
You can have it excellent and affordable.
But all three?
That’s a fantasy.
The Starting Point
In music production, this triangle is everywhere.
You want:
-
a finished track this weekend
-
radio-ready sound
-
zero budget
You want:
-
custom production
-
instant turnaround
-
premium quality
The math doesn’t bend just because we wish it would.
The Invitation
Look at your last project.
Were you rushing to meet a deadline?
Were you trying to save money on tools or time?
Were you aiming for your best work yet?
Which two did you actually choose?
Because whether you said it out loud or not,
you chose.
The Test
The tension usually appears here:
You want the mix to sound world-class…
but you also want it done tonight.
You want to master arrangement…
but you don’t want to study fundamentals.
You want growth…
without investing time.
That friction you feel?
That’s the triangle doing its job.
The Guidepost
Constraints are not the enemy.
They clarify priorities.
If it’s cheap and fast, accept that it’s practice.
If it’s fast and great, accept the cost.
If it’s great and affordable, accept the time required.
Peace comes from choosing consciously.
The Change
When you stop demanding all three,
you gain control.
You plan differently.
You communicate clearly.
You set realistic creative goals.
Suddenly:
-
demos become demos
-
deep work gets protected time
-
budgets match ambition
No frustration.
Just alignment.
The Return
Every project is a small journey.
You begin with a desire.
You face the limits of reality.
You return with clarity.
Cheap. Fast. Great.
Before your next session, ask:
Which two am I choosing?
And then commit fully.
That decision alone improves the outcome.

Song of the Week 🎧
“Everybody Wants To Rule The World” — Tears For Fears
|
Here is the complete sound of the 1980's in one song. The classic sampled drum machine LinnDrum, paired with a PPG Wave 2 wavetable synth bassline, provides an impactful rhythm section for the lead vocals and harmonies to take us on a magical song structure journey. Every part is better than the last part. Two great guitar solos playing with digital delay and reverb, and haunting melodies that will be stuck in your head all week.

This book will change the way you think about how you spend your time executing your To-Do list. James figured it out the hard way after a crazy accident.
