Invest In Things Beneath You
“The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”
— Benjamin Franklin

There’s a simple rule for spending money wisely:
Invest in what’s beneath you.
Your mattress.
Your shoes.
Your tires.
If you’re standing on it, sleeping on it, or driving on it —
don’t go cheap.
Foundation matters.
👉 Pro Tip: Buy cushioned soles for all of your shoes. Buy at least one pair of the expensive ones. Your shoes will last longer and you'll be walking on clouds all day. Enjoy!
The Starting Point
It’s easy to spend on what’s visible.
New jacket.
New gadget.
New plugin.
But the invisible supports carry your life.
A bad mattress steals energy.
Cheap shoes wear down your body.
Worn tires gamble with control.
The base determines the ride.
The Invitation
In music production, the same principle applies.
The rhythm section is your mattress.
Kick.
Snare.
Bass.
If those aren’t solid, nothing above them feels stable.
You can add sparkle, layers, width, atmosphere —
But if the low end is weak,
the entire track wobbles.
The Test
Think about a mix that feels powerful.
The kick anchors.
The snare speaks clearly.
The bass locks in.
Everything else floats on top.
Now think about a mix where the foundation is unclear.
No amount of top-end shimmer fixes that.
You don’t decorate a shaky house.
You reinforce the ground.
The Guidepost
When mixing, invest your time first in:
Kick tone.
Snare impact.
Bass clarity.
Balance them.
Shape them.
Let them breathe together.
Once the foundation feels right,
the rest becomes easier.
Guitars sit naturally.
Vocals cut through.
Effects enhance instead of distract.
The Change
Stop chasing polish.
Strengthen the base.
In life, that means sleep, posture, stability.
In music, that means rhythm, weight, pulse.
When the foundation is firm:
You mix faster.
You decide cleaner.
You trust what you’re building.
The Return
Before your next purchase, ask:
Is this surface — or structure?
Before your next mix, ask:
Have I invested in the rhythm section?
Kick.
Snare.
Bass.
Build from beneath.
Everything above it will stand stronger.

“The Piña Colada Song” — Rupert Holmes
|
There are some songs that, when the chorus hits, everyone in the room starts singing along. This is one of them. A perfect example of the idea that we all love stories, no matter what the story is. What is this song about? Connection? Day drinking? Who cares? Listen to the soaring, echoing guitar solos that connect the choruses to the verse and outro. Listen to the infectious groove and perfect drum fills that the legendary drummer Steve Jordan (currently in The Rolling Stones) lays down. Listen to the stacked vocals and reverb in the choruses. The clean, funky rhythm guitars throughout. This song is where melody and feel collide. Fade out ending...
